How to Evaluate Walkability and Commute Times

Walkability and commute time sound like separate topics until you try to live with them. A neighborhood can be “walkable” on a map and still feel exhausting at 7:10 a.m., when you are late, it is raining, and the route that looks short turns out to be four left turns around a construction fence. Commute time can look great on paper and still be frustrating when the actual trip includes unreliable bus headways, a slow transfer, or a final mile that feels unsafe after dark.
